The single accrediting body for all allopathic and osteopathic medical residency and fellowship programs in the United States, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), has released proposed changes to the requirements for sponsoring institutions (SIs), with a target implementation date as early as July 1, 2025. Teaching hospitals should review the proposed changes and respond to the ACGME with any comments by October 9, 2024.
Proposed Changes
The proposed updates follow themes and findings from the CLER Program and ACGME’s SI 2025 initiative. To help organizations prepare to respond during the comment period, some key themes related to shifts in both day-to-day institutional operations and the learning environment are described below. A summary of all proposed changes to the SI requirements can be found here.
Operations and Personnel
The core operational changes focus on the primary clinical learning environment (PCLE) and the incorporation of resources to foster integration with graduate medical education (GME).
Learning Environment and Procedures
The proposed changes focus on the implementation of core policies and procedures to ensure the trainee learning environment is standardized across all clinical sites.
